After learning about Mr. Ramroop, I eagerly contacted his shop “Maurice Sedwell” on Savile Row, London, hoping to speak with him. I was told he was at his residence in Trinidad and Tobago and was given his email address to contact him there. Eventually, we spoke on the phone and I discovered that he happens to have a trunk show a few times a year in which he visits clients in the U.S. I couldn’t contain my excitement during my initial conversation with Ramroop, as I was eager to get my hands on a Savile Row bespoke suit.

When the time came for Ramroop’s next visit to NYC, I was simply a train ride away from reaching him at the Kimberly Hotel. I arrived in my Made-to-Measure suit at Ramroop’s suite and began the bespoke consultation. The first question any tailor would ask you is “What is the purpose of this bespoke commission?” I told Ramroop I was looking for a business suit. He immediately pulled his swatches from different fabric mills from English to Italian. Ramroop carries lightweight clothes that range from Supers 130s-150s. If you want heavier fabrics you can request them in advance for him to bring them to his trunk show.

My consultation process with Andrew Ramroop

During my Bespoke consultation with Ramroop, I selected a gray chalk stripe Super 150s cloth from Harrisons 1863 Grand CRU collection. Ramroop asked why I selected this cloth since usually for your first bespoke suit, tailors would lean you toward a solid gray or navy fabric. However, I have an obsession with striped fabrics and thought it would be a good addition to my collection. Ramroop continued to review the style details such as pockets, vents, lapel, and trousers. I had already made up my mind and wanted the signature style invented by Ramroop at Maurice Sedwell, called the “curve”. The curved pockets match the skirt of the jacket.

Toile Fitting by Master Tailor Andrew Ramroop

After my bespoke consultation with Ramroop, I received three fittings. The first fitting is called a “toile” which is the French word for basted fitting. Usually, most tailors would cut the fabric you choose for your suit for the first fitting. However, this is not the case for Ramroop. Ramroop cuts a master template for you from different fabrics to help create a pattern for your body shape. After the first fitting with the master template, he then cuts your fabric for the 2nd fitting. I had about three fittings altogether, and the fourth time I met with him I tried on the finished product.

You may ask yourself if all these fittings are really necessary or worth it and the answer is yes. During these fittings, Ramroop worked closely with me to ensure that the suit fit me perfectly and was constructed to my liking. The images below show the finished product as well as specific details of the suit.

I now have a suit that I can wear for various occasions throughout the year and I honestly couldn’t be happier with Ramroop’s process as well as the finished product. Ramroop pays significant attention to detail and dedicates substantial effort to crafting garments. Overall, Ramroop’s suit surpassed all of my expectations in terms of style and comfort.
